Description

Whole dried elderberries, small dark berries from the elder shrub (Sambucus nigra), with a deep, slightly tart, fruity flavor that lands somewhere between a raisin and a black currant. Hand-packed at Home Folk's Bulk Herb Store, sold in 1/4 lb and 1/2 lb sizes so you can buy what you need for one batch of syrup or stock the pantry for a season of putting up.

A note before you start: elderberries should always be cooked before eating. Even dried, the berries contain a compound called sambunigrin that can cause upset stomach if consumed raw. Simmering, steeping in hot water, or baking at a full oven temperature all take care of it, so syrup, tea, tinctures (the alcohol cooks them through), muffins, scones, and quick breads are all in. Skip the raw applications: no-bake granola, raw energy bites, or sprinkled onto cereal that isn't hot.

Elderberries have historically been respected as one of the great old pantry berries. Bring a small pot to a low simmer with a little water, strain, sweeten with honey, and you have the elderberry syrup that's been on kitchen counters for generations. Steep them as a tea, fold them into muffin batter or a fruit bread, or use them anywhere you'd reach for a dried raisin or currant in a cooked recipe.

One of the longtime favorites from our bulk herbs and berries selection. A nice companion to the red rose petals on the same pantry shelf when you're building your own blends.

Ingredients: Elderberries (Sambucus nigra).

How to Use

Always cook elderberries before eating. Brew them into a tea by simmering 1 to 2 teaspoons in a cup of hot water for 10 to 15 minutes. Make them into a syrup or tincture. Fold them into muffins, scones, quick breads, or any baked recipe where you'd typically use raisins or dried currants. Do not use in no-bake or raw preparations.

Ingredients

100% Natural, Culinary Grade: Elderberries (Sambucus nigra).

Precautions

Precautions / Allergens:
Sambunigrin, which is present in raw elderberry fruit, can cause vomiting and diarrhea if ingested. Please consult a qualified healthcare professional before adding herbal products to your routine, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.

Shipping & Returns

Shipping & Returns
A quick note before you check out: here's how we get your order from our farm to your front porch, and what to expect along the way.

When We Ship
We ship Monday through Thursday, holidays excepted. Most orders go out the door in 1 to 4 business days. During sales and the holiday rush we may run a little behind, and we appreciate your patience when that happens.

US Shipping Rates
Flat rate shipping is $8.50, and standard US shipping is on us for orders over $89. We send packages through USPS or UPS, and you'll get a tracking number by email the moment your order leaves the warehouse.

A small ask on delivery...
Please double-check your shipping address at checkout and make sure it's somewhere your package can land safely. Once your order is in the carrier's hands, lost, stolen, or misdelivered packages are out of our reach, and the carrier will be your best contact for tracking questions. Hold onto that tracking number, it's your lifeline if anything goes sideways in transit.

Fabric Orders
Because every fabric cut is made just for you, we're unable to accept fabric returns once it's been cut, shipped, washed, or worked with. We know that's a firmer line than we'd like to draw, and we wish we could be more flexible here, but cut yardage simply can't go back on the bolt for the next maker.

Non-Fabric Returns

We accept returns on non-fabric items within 30 days for store credit, provided they are returned in new condition with the original packaging and tags still attached. Return shipping is the customer's to cover.

Items need to arrive free of damage, including pet hair, smoke, perfume, stains, holes, or tears. Once your return arrives at our warehouse, allow up to 5 days for the store credit to be processed.

A few things we can't take back: final sale items marked 50% off or more and grab bags. We also have the right to decline a refund for anything that shows signs of alteration, misuse, or damage, or that was a final sale at the time of purchase.

And one more shipping note: we can't cover lost, stolen, or damaged packages in transit, so please keep that tracking number handy.

How store credit works...
Once your return arrives and we've had a chance to look it over, we'll issue a store credit code equal to the product's value (excluding original shipping and package protection). The code lands in your inbox at the email address you used to order, and it doesn't expire, so you can spend it whenever the right thing catches your eye.

Rooted in Old-Fashioned Traditions

From our farm to your front porch...

We're a family in the Missouri Ozarks, with a deep love for traditional folk skills and good ol' country living. We blend herbs and pack orders by hand, the same way we do most things around here: a little slower, a little more careful, with people we love pitching in. There's a whole story behind Home Folk, and we'd love to share it. Come meet the folks behind your order.
