Sewing & Quilting Threads

Sewing and quilting thread is half the project. We carry the spools we reach for at our own machines, with Aurifil leading the way and Daruma sashiko thread for the handwork.

Aurifil's 50wt Mako cotton runs clean through pieced blocks and quilts up without lint clouds in the bobbin case. The 50wt is the everyday workhorse for piecing and machine quilting; heavier weights show off the stitch when you want it seen. Daruma sashiko thread rounds out the line for the slow, in-the-lap handwork. We stock a working range of neutrals and accent colors, plus the Aurifil starter set where a lot of quilters begin a spool collection.

Pick the thread first, then the project tells you what it wanted all along. The fabric to match lives on Fabric, and the embroidery floss on DMC Floss.

Frequently asked questions about our Sewing & Quilting Threads

What is the difference between Aurifil 50wt, 40wt, and 28wt cotton thread?

The number is the weight, and counterintuitively, a higher number means a finer thread. 50wt is the finest and the go-to for piecing and machine quilting, since it sinks into the seam and disappears. 40wt is medium and lets the quilting stitch show a little. 28wt is the chunky one, beautiful for hand-quilting and decorative top-stitching.

Which thread should I use for hand-stitching versus machine work?

For machine piecing and quilting, Aurifil 50wt Mako cotton is the standard, smooth-running pick. For sashiko and slower handwork, Daruma sashiko thread is made for the longer stitches and the bolder line.

Do you carry full thread sets or sample packs for quilters starting out?

Yes. The Aurifil 20pc Thread Set, like the Evolve by Suzy Quilts collection, is a popular starter for quilters building a working spool collection. It covers the everyday neutrals and a handful of accent colors, enough to get through most projects without re-shopping every weekend.
