DMC Floss + Embroidery Threads

DMC has been making six-strand cotton floss in France since the 1700s, and the reason it has stuck around that long is that it just works beautifully. The thread is mercerized, which gives it a soft sheen and helps the color hold up to washing. The six strands separate cleanly, so you can stitch with all six for a bold line or pull two for something more delicate. The color range is the most reached-for in the cross-stitch and embroidery world for a reason.

Our selection covers the everyday workhorses (the reds, greens, blues, and creams you reach for over and over) along with the small specialties that make a piece sing. Shades like Very Dark Cranberry 600, Light Emerald Green 912, and Light Baby Blue 3325 show the range, from saturated to soft. Each skein is numbered, so you can match a pattern thread for thread.

DMC pairs naturally with the embroidery and needlework kits we carry. For the broader stitching collection, browse the full fabric collection when a project asks for a ground cloth to work on, or settle in with a cup from the tea collection while you stitch.

Frequently asked questions about our DMC Floss + Embroidery Threads

How many strands does DMC floss come in, and how do I use them?

Each skein is six-strand cotton. The strands separate cleanly, so you can stitch with all six for a bold line or pull two or three for something more delicate. Most cross-stitch patterns will tell you how many strands to use; for embroidery and surface stitching, it's the maker's call.

Why is DMC floss numbered?

Each color in the DMC range has its own number (Very Dark Cranberry 600, Light Emerald Green 912, Light Baby Blue 3325, and so on), which lets you match a pattern thread for thread. The numbering system is the standard in cross-stitch and embroidery patterns worldwide, so a chart that calls for DMC 600 will get you the same red whether the pattern was designed in Texas or in France.

What does “mercerized” cotton mean?

It's a finishing treatment that gives the cotton a soft sheen and helps the color hold up to washing. It's part of why DMC floss has been the reached-for thread in the stitching world for centuries.
